Undertaker: I have the advantage right now. He won’t be able to get up before I reach him. How’s it going?
Mick Foley: Hey, how are you? It takes me a bit longer to recover from this. How are you, my man?
Undertaker: I’m alright. Good to see you, brother. Knock me over.
Mick Foley: Well, I’m still as stiff as ever.
Undertaker: How are you, my friend?
Mick Foley: I’m doing great. I have to tell you, there’s only one person in the world for whom I would give up my Disney vacation, catch a flight to Austin, Texas, and return within 24 hours.
Undertaker: Really? Do I know this person?
Mick Foley: It’s you, my friend. It’s you. [MUSIC] This match has become such a significant part of wrestling history that there are people who celebrate its anniversary every year by gathering together to watch it.
Undertaker: Yeah, it’s crazy. There aren’t many matches like this that come up in conversations. Hell in a Cell with Mick Foley is one of those matches that people always want to know about.
Mick Foley: They want to know what I was thinking. Well, I figured I’d throw him on that table and see what happened. My answer keeps changing, but it always comes down to the same thing. Sometimes, I just make up things. I once said he owed me some transportation.
Undertaker: There are actually reaction videos out there where fans show this match to non-fans.
Mick Foley: Yeah.
Undertaker: The expressions on their faces change everything they thought they knew about what we do.
Mick Foley: Exactly.
Undertaker: It makes them realize they don’t know a thing. But I love the idea that it’s the go-to match that gets wrestling fans excited.
Mick Foley: Why do you watch that? Then they watch it, and fifteen minutes later, some of them become fans, and if they don’t, they at least develop a respect.
Undertaker: Absolutely.
Mick Foley: It changes everything they thought they knew. So I’m making my entrance, and it’s like a symphony of silence. It wasn’t the grand match feel I wanted because we had our great history from ’96. But at that point, I didn’t feel like I belonged in a match of that magnitude. It felt like what I had done was on a downward slide. I had portrayed all these different characters in a short time, and now I’m back to being mankind.
Undertaker: Well, I think you’re about to change that.
Mick Foley: I think so, right?
Undertaker: I believe you’re about to alter all those emotions here.
Mick Foley: Yeah, nothing was feeling that way. Now I have to try and throw the chair up on top. Bam, look at that surprising upper body strength. And that chair will go on to play a significant role.
Undertaker: A major part in this.
Mick Foley: [LAUGH] I’m having all kinds of difficulties.
Undertaker: You’re like a cat.
Mick Foley: Are you kidding me? People think that would be easy.
Undertaker: That’s, what, 16 feet? Well, not exactly, but let me tell you, when you’re at a pay-per-view with around 15,000 to 16,000 people, and you have to climb a steel fence, you realize, “What on earth have I done?”
Mick Foley: That was probably the first time your music played.
Undertaker: I took a look over the edge, and you rarely hear me curse in real life, right?
Mick Foley: Yeah, I’ve hardly ever heard you curse.
Undertaker: But in my thoughts, all I could think was, “What the bleep am I doing here? How the bleep am I gonna get out of here? You dumb, he told you not to do this.” He told you repeatedly.
Mick Foley: Yeah, he did. So when your music started playing, I started exploring options on how I could climb down without ruining myself. I knew I could climb down, but I didn’t believe I could do it without completely destroying my career. That’s what was going through my mind.
Mick Foley: I think I can do it. But I’m gonna completely destroy my career.
Undertaker: It’s one of those rare occasions where someone wishes I walked even slower. People were trying to figure out why I was up there. At that moment, all I could think about was getting up that fence. My foot was throbbing.
Mick Foley: Taker had a broken foot. I don’t know if you told me that, but we’ll find out in a few minutes. Maybe you can talk about the pain you were in. But a lesser man would have given up and protected himself, especially with a broken foot.
Mick Foley: I had to get up there, and there was a good chance that as soon as I got up, I would get hit with something.
Undertaker: I think I was actually hitting you as you were making your way up. And that young lady with the bangs, she actually attended my 20th anniversary show.
Mick Foley: Really?
Undertaker: Yeah, she did. The dentist who worked on my teeth and put them back in my mouth was there too.
Mick Foley: Mick… [CROSSTALK]
Undertaker: One more thing, you should have a clue. There we go. I took a look at the fans. They looked like ants. At what point do we hear the first twist tie spring off? Zip tie.
Mick Foley: Yeah, it’s coming up, right?
Undertaker: We both step through it momentarily. There they go.
Mick Foley: And I remember being up there, thinking to myself, I don’t recall there being any zip ties in that Shawn Michaels Undertaker match.
Undertaker: Yeah, I don’t know what they did differently. But you can see the metal twist ties there. I don’t know. I don’t know.
Undertaker: And then the first one drops. And now, what I love about this is that in the next 10 to 15 seconds, I’m going to attempt to suplex you on top of that structure. Here we go. But watch how quickly you shut that down.
Mick Foley: Are you crazy? We were just stepping on it, and we almost went through. You’re out of your mind.
Undertaker: Here we go.
Mick Foley: Look at that, you can hear them.
Undertaker: Nobody saw that.
Mick Foley: It’s crazy. And I’m looking over, and all I’m waiting for is to see if you’re moving. That’s all I’m thinking about right now. With a good foot, okay, but with the way I’m feeling, yeah, the foot’s throbbing.
Undertaker: Yeah, you’re covered in tacks. And I don’t even know if you realize it, but we’ll see in a few minutes. Maybe you can speak to the pain you were in. But look, gosh, I don’t know if you remember this. The last thing I said to you before we went out, there were some of those zip ties. I said, look, you might need to choke-slam me five or six times before the cage starts to give way.
Mick Foley: I remember that. And I said, “I gotta get up there, and there’s a good chance that as soon as I get up there, I’m gonna get hit with something.”
Undertaker: I think I’m actually wailing away at you as you’re on your way up. And that young lady with the bangs, she actually came to my 20th anniversary show.
Mick Foley: Really?

Mick Foley: [LAUGH] And I think this is an audible here with the tombstone.
Undertaker: Good lordy. Look at that. [LAUGH]
Mick Foley: [LAUGH] Yeah, the choke slam.
Undertaker: Choke slam. Choke slam was the audible. That’s what I get, we got there.
Mick Foley: There we go, there we go. Tooth still in the nose. [LAUGH]
Undertaker: Those people, man, they were losing their ever-loving minds.
Mick Foley: Come here, buddy. God.
Undertaker: And mercifully, I think JR even says mercifully, this is over. Bam. Now watch this, my left leg.
Mick Foley: Feeling a little croppy here?
Undertaker: One, two, three.
Mick Foley: The kick out, the huge kick out.
Undertaker: I was still fighting, brother.
Mick Foley: That’s awesome, man.
Undertaker: The Undertaker.
Mick Foley: I think I was telling Timmy to make sure you don’t get up again. I know we just did something really, really special, but at this point, I’m just trying to figure out what all you’ve broken. [LAUGH] And how you did the last ten minutes of that because-
Undertaker: If I had gotten the height on that choke slam like I did in our regular matches, I don’t think I would be in a position to finish the match or ever wrestle again.
Mick Foley: I tell you, yeah, another two inches of rotation.
Undertaker: Yep, I would’ve landed on my neck or the top of my head.
Mick Foley: I don’t think you would get up, man. I mean, when you watch this thing back, you get all the same emotions and feelings.
Undertaker: Yeah, for a while, I did kinda resent that match because it was the only thing people ever asked me about.
Mick Foley: Do you remember when you and Michelle came to see my show in Austin?
Undertaker: I do, I do.
Mick Foley: And you said something to me, and it was so profound. You said, “You know, Jack, what you and I did that night is gonna outlive us both.”
Undertaker: Mm-hmm.
Mick Foley: And I looked at you, and you said, “People will be talking about this after both of us are dead and gone.”
Undertaker: [CROSSTALK], yeah.
Mick Foley: And it completely changed the way I felt about that match because I realized how lucky I was to have one thing. Maybe there are three things that I have that’ll define my career.
Undertaker: No, your career was defined long before this. But I mean, this is one of those things that we were just blessed to have. I mean, it’s crazy.
Mick Foley: And you’re right. This will go on through the annals of time.
Undertaker: Yeah, and I noticed that as I do signings, and you’ve probably seen this too. A lot of the people who come up to you about the Cell weren’t even born when it took place.
Mick Foley: Yes, yeah.
Undertaker: And that’s when I realized, in addition to what you told me that night, I realized people are making a conscious effort to pass this down.
Mick Foley: And of course, most people are going to look at the highlights. And it’s great that in the World Cup, when a soccer team goes up 3-0, there’ll be memes that say, “Will somebody stop the damn match?” [LAUGH] [LAUGH] And it’s great for the soundbites. But when you watch it from beginning to end, as I did with my kids, when my wife said that she thought they were ready for it and that kids in school were asking, I hadn’t watched the match in its entirety in about ten years.
Undertaker: And when I watched it, I realized this thing packs a wallop. It’s an emotional wallop.
Mick Foley: And then when you add everything else that we had done together already to just then put that on top of it, it was just like, man. I mean, these guys, the links that these two guys, just two perfect characters.
Undertaker: Two evil characters that just pitted themselves in this war against each other, that just ended up in this kind of Armageddon type match.
Mick Foley: But imagine if we had been the first Cell match, and I didn’t have the match with you and Shawn to try to at least do justice to. I didn’t think I could top it, but I didn’t want to embarrass myself either.
Undertaker: Well, I have more faith in you and us that I think we would have. We may not have had a match that they’re talking about 25 years later, but we would have had a hell of a match. Your instincts were always great. And thank goodness, man, that everything…
Mick Foley: We’re still here 25 years later, to be able to sit here and enjoy it.
Undertaker: And we are, laugh about it.
Mick Foley: Laugh about it. When you watch that, there’s not a lot there to laugh about. There’s a lot [CROSSTALK].
Undertaker: On the surface, it doesn’t seem to be a barrel full of laughs.
Mick Foley: He wasn’t even done yet.
Undertaker: Do we have the ability to queue up the most pathetic run-in/slash limp in? I came running in and interfered. What I’ve said is, when you come out to interfere in a match, it’s gonna change the course of wrestling history, which it did, because it won Kane the title.
Mick Foley: Kane the title, yeah.
Undertaker: You’d figure that the guy coming out to cheat on his friend’s behalf is going to have some modicum of heat out there. When I walked out, you just got the feeling, people were like, “Haven’t you had enough?”
Mick Foley: Can we have an intervention here? Did somebody lock him backstage? He’s got Kane and Austin.
Undertaker: And even Jim Ross is like, “God, good God.” He’s come back like, “Please go to the back.” So on that night, I not only lied to you and told you I was comfortable there. I not only lied to Vince, but then I lied to whoever in the back asked me if I thought I could go back out there. Yes, I can.
Mick Foley: I’m good.
Undertaker: I’m good, brother. [LAUGH]
Mick Foley: A different mentality back then, man. My gosh. Those were the good old days, they really were. But my goodness, the pride that we took and what we did, I don’t know. I don’t think there’s anything that could have kept you backstage. If you could walk, I knew you would go.
Undertaker: You always have to think, well, it’s incredible that you came back out again
Undertaker: You always have to think, well, it’s incredible that you came back out again, but the lore is like, man, he’s got to be on his way to the hospital by now, right? >> Not so fast. >> Not so fast.
Mick Foley: And what you said backstage in Austin, to me, that had to have been ten years ago, holds true today.
Undertaker: People will be talking about this match when both of us are long gone. And that makes me happy.
Mick Foley: Yeah, it makes me really proud. Thanks again, buddy.
Undertaker: Thank you, thank you.
Mick Foley: Awesome.
