Top 10 Money in the Bank PPV Moments

Tonight, the Money in the Bank pay-per-view returns emanating from the WWE Performance and WWE HQ, due to the ongoing global pandemic.

The Money in the Bank Ladder match first made it’s appearance on WWE television at WrestleMania 21, where Edge became the first man to win the briefcase, that would guarantee him a world title match, whenever he saw fit, within the next 12 months.

The match itself eventually evolved into its own pay-per-view 2010, and the event has been held annually ever since.

Let’s take a look at the Top 10 moments from the annual pay-per-view.

Kane cashes in on the same night

At the first Money in the Bank pay-per-view in 2010, Kane won the Money in the Bank Ladder Match to guarantee him a contract for a match challenging the World Heavyweight Champion, over the next 12 months. Kane wasted little time and cashed in on Rey Mysterio that same night, picking up the win after Rey’s World Title defence against Jack Swagger.

Dolph Ziggler wins Money in the Bank

Dolph Ziggler finally hit the jackpot at Money in the Bank 2012 when he won the Money in the Bank contract for a shot at the World Heavyweight Title within the next 12 months. Dolph eventually cashed his contract in the night after WrestleMania 29, to win the World Heavyweight Title in front of a wild and jubilant crowd.

Baron Corbin wins Money in the Bank

In 2017, the Money in the Bank pay-per-view became exclusive to the SmackDown brand for one year only, following the revived brand split between Raw and SmackDown. The men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match saw Baron Corbin claim the briefcase, against challengers such as; AJ Styles, Kevin Owens & Shinsuke Nakamura. Corbin went on to cash-in his Money in the Bank briefcase on an episode of SmackDown and failed, becoming the third wrestler to cash-in and fail to win the respective championship. Will Corbin get his redemption by winning the 2020 Money in the Bank briefcase?

John Cena wins the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Title

At the event in 2014, there were two Ladder Matches. One that was for the Money in the Bank briefcase, and a match for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship which had been vacated by the injured Daniel Bryan. This ultimately saw John Cena become the champion in the star-studded Ladder Match, and the first time a Ladder Match at this event had been contested specifically for the title.

All three Shield members hold the WWE World Title in the same night

At the 2016 event in Las Vegas, NV, Dean Ambrose won the Money in the Bank contract to guarantee himself a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Title. The main event that same night was Roman Reigns defending the title against his former Shield brother, Seth Rollins. Rollins went on to become the World Champion, defeating Roman Reigns. Would Ambrose come out and spoil the Rollins party? He certainly would. Ambrose came out and cashed-in his Money in the Bank briefcase, meaning all three Shield members had held the WWE World Heavyweight Title in the same night.

Kevin Owens vs. John Cena

Kevin Owens and John Cena began their feud early in 2015, when then NXT Champion, Kevin Owens, answered John Cena’s United States Championship open challenge on an episode of Raw. Owens defeated Cena at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view that year, winning the US Title from Cena. The rematch, with no title involved, was held at the Money in the Bank event which ended up being an incredible match, so much so it was given a 4.5 match rating by Wrestling Observers, Dave Meltzer.

AJ Styles vs. John Cena

Following on from his incredible match with Kevin Owens the previous year, John Cena was at it again. This time against ‘The Phenomenal’ AJ Styles. This was dubbed a WrestleMania Dream Match by WWE, and a dream match come true for many around the world. As you would imagine, both men delivered big time and left us wanting more. We did get to see this match one more time a few months later at the Royal Rumble event, where Cena ended up becoming a 16-time world champion, to tie Ric Flair’s illustrious record.

Brock Lesnar returns to win Money in the Bank

Money in the Bank 2019 brought out a BIG surprise in the form of ‘The Beast’ Brock Lesnar. During the latter stages of the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match, after participant Sami Zayn had been ruled out earlier in the night, Brock Lesnar’s music hit and he had ‘officially’ replaced Sami Zayn in the match in the match. Unforunately for Ali, who was within touching distance of claiming the briefcase, Brock went on a warpath and eventually climbed the ladder to win the briefcase.

The first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match

The WWE women’s revolution was in full swing during 2017, which gave WWE’s management a decision to make. Do they put women in the dangerous Money in the Bank Ladder match? The conclusion was yes, and at the 2017 SmackDown branded event, the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder match took place, seeing Carmella win the briefcase in controversial circumstances with help from the James Ellsworth. This eventually saw a second Money in the Bank Ladder match being held on SmackDown days later.

John Cena vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship

One of the greatest matches in recent memory. John Cena vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship. Money in the Bank 2011. Chicago, IL at the Allstate Arena. Need I say more. The match was built from CM Punk’s pipebomb that he delivered weeks earlier, resulting in CM Punk threatening to leave the WWE with the WWE Championship as his contract was due to expire the very same night of the Money in the Bank event. Punk had his hometown crowd behind him all the way, and he eventually walked out as the champion, despite attempts from Mr McMahon to stop that from happening. In one of the most iconic moments shows CM Punk, with the WWE Championship in his hands, blowing a kiss to Mr McMahon as he exits over the barricade and into the crowd. The match and story gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. It was ultimately given 5-stars by Dave Meltzer – this being Dave’s first WWE 5-star rating since 1997.
